Coil Fitting in Wimbledon: What to Expect From Your Appointments
Considering a coil? For many women, an intrauterine device (IUD or “coil”) can provide a safe, effective and convenient long-term option for contraception, menstrual symptom management, or as part of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Whether you are considering a hormonal coil (IUS) or a non-hormonal copper coil (IUCD), our experienced private GPs offer personalised advice and support, guiding you through the process in a calm, supportive and professional environment. We provide private coil fitting in Wimbledon for patients across Wimbledon Village and the wider South West London area. We understand that many patients may feel anxious about the idea of a coil fitting, particularly if it is their first time. Our aim is to ensure you feel fully informed, comfortable and reassured at every stage.
Types of Coil We Fit
We offer both hormonal and non-hormonal coils, and will help you choose the option that best suits your lifestyle and health needs:
Hormonal coil (intrauterine system, IUS), such as the Mirena or Kyleena, which can also help reduce heavy or painful periods and may be used as part of HRT
Copper coil (intrauterine device, IUCD), a non-hormonal, long-acting reversible contraceptive
Both are forms of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) and can provide effective contraception for several years. We also offer coil removal and replacement, including coils originally fitted elsewhere.
Your Initial Coil Assessment Consultation (20 Minutes)
The first step is a dedicated 20-minute consultation with one of our FSRH approved GPs. This appointment is designed to give you the opportunity to discuss your symptoms, medical history, menstrual cycle, contraceptive needs, and any concerns you may have.
During the consultation, we will talk through the different types of coils available, helping you decide which may be most suitable for your lifestyle and health needs.
We will explain:
How the coil works
Benefits and risks
How to prepare for a coil fitting
What to expect during insertion
Post insertion care
Possible side effects and changes to bleeding patterns
When a coil may not be suitable
Our GPs take time to ensure you feel fully informed and comfortable before making any decision. If needed, we may also arrange additional investigations beforehand, such as vaginal swabs, review of cervical screening results, or pelvic imaging.
If you decide to proceed, we can then arrange your fitting appointment at a convenient time. As part of the appointment, we will also discuss the consent process in detail and provide a consent form for you to review and complete before proceeding with treatment. This gives you the opportunity to fully understand the procedure, ask questions, and feel confident in your decision.
Your Coil Fitting Appointment
(40 Minutes)
Your fitting appointment is a longer, dedicated 40-minute appointment carried out by one of our experienced GPs, with a trained nurse present throughout as a chaperone to provide support and reassurance.
The procedure takes place in a calm and private clinical setting, with a strong focus on comfort, dignity and safety. Local anaesthetic is routinely used to help minimise discomfort, and the coil is inserted using a sterile technique.
Although the fitting itself is usually relatively quick, we allow plenty of time so the appointment never feels rushed. This includes the opportunity to address any questions or concerns before starting the procedure, careful insertion and recovery afterwards.
Following the procedure, you may experience some mild cramping or light bleeding, which is common and usually settles within a few days. Before you leave, we will provide clear aftercare instructions and explain what to expect over the coming weeks.
Experienced Care in a Supportive Environment
We know that attending for a coil fitting can feel daunting, particularly if you are feeling anxious about the procedure or have had a difficult experience in the past. Our team prides itself on providing compassionate, unhurried care, ensuring patients feel listened to, comfortable and supported throughout.
The fee for the fitting appointment includes both the cost of the coil and the procedure itself.
As the fitting appointment requires prior assessment and planning, coil fittings cannot be booked directly online and are arranged following your initial consultation.
